A slower morning
Copyediting for rhythm. An original short passage prepared for this portfolio.
Each morning, she returned to the window. Pale light touched the books on the table. She paused before beginning.
Why these changes?
“Returned again” repeats an idea already carried by the verb. Removing the repeated description of softness leaves a quieter rhythm. The revision keeps the pause rather than adding an explanation of the character’s feelings.
What still needs an author’s decision?
A longer manuscript might need a slower version of this paragraph. The surrounding voice and the author’s intention should decide how far to compress; the shortest sentence is not automatically the right one.
